About Jay
Jay grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky where he excelled in academic s and sports. His hard work and talents led to his acceptance to Princeton University where he enjoyed the position of Quarterback on the Princeton Football team. Unlike most of his classmates Jay married his high school sweetheart before graduation, the couple remaining inseparable until he died. After leaving college Jay served in the United States Navy as an aircraft carrier pilot flying A3’s and A4’s in the Pacific fleet.
His career with Delta Airlines led Jay to settle in the North Georgia area where he and his wife Julie raised four daughters. Jay started running and biking way before anyone thought it to be cool! Jay became the ring leader of a group of athletes (all junior in age!) that stuck together and participated in various triathlons, running, biking and mountain biking races for 20 years. He was fortunate enough to enjoy several retirement years mountain biking in the Midwest and accomplishing two cross country trips across the USA.
He was the most amazing grandfather to 15 grandchildren and he was a faithful member of his church that led by example. He understood the importance of physical and spiritual health, and was solid as a rock in his commitment to his family and community.
This race is a great way to celebrate the life of Jay and there is no doubt he would get a kick out of the fact that so many folks are out on the roads doing what he most loved…… the icing on the cake is that this race also raises awareness and benefits our community in so many ways!
As the youngest 64 year old ever known, Jay lost his life when he was hit by a motorist while biking in North Georgia, hence the theme of this race. Please take a moment to look over the info on the Share the Road Campaign – Awareness can save lives!
